A live fire demonstration, hosted by ATEC’s Aberdeen Test Center on Saturday, May 19, completed Aberdeen Proving Ground’s Armed Forces Week celebration. The ticketed event began with equipment displays, followed by a parade of vehicles and the live fire demonstration. The large crowd also witnessed how helicopters can be used to put out range fires that can result from the testing. During the event, Installation and CECOM Commander Maj. Gen. Robert Ferrell and ATC Commander Col. Jeffery Holt gave welcoming remarks. Joe Ondek received the “Hero on the Home Front” award. Ondek has served the United States for more than 53 years. More than 47 of those years he served at APG. He has served as a Marine, and a Department of Defense Civilian for APG’s Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division. He currently serves a biologist for ATC, as a DoD contractor. “His institutional knowledge of APG and the United States military is vast,” said narrator Wayne Strine. “His dedication to APG and the environment is both admirable and remarkable.” “I work with heroes every day, Ondek said, as he accepted the award. “The military is what keeps this country strong.” Ondek and Purple Heart recipient Kelly Keck, an ATEC employee, fired the first rounds to open the live fire demonstration.
