By August 1987 the Peaks had been stripped of their passenger duties and the remaining locomotives found themselves on more mundane workings such as these. 45140 unofficially named 'Mercury' has run around its train of containerised waste at Burscough on the Wigan - Southport line and will work back to Appley Bridge where it will propel its train into the former Quarry used as a (controversial) land-fill site.View image on Flickr
