The Postcard A postally unused postcard bearing no studio name. Although the card was not posted, one of the two girls has written on the message side of the divided back: "Edith Wardell, 'Cora Linn', Redditch. July 24th. 1915 Age 19 years, 3 weeks, 1 day". Edith would have been born on Thursday the 2nd. July 1896. Corra (sic) Linn is the highest of four linn (Scots: waterfalls) comprising The Falls of Clyde. which is the collective name for four waterfalls on the River Clyde near New Lanark, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Corra Linn has a fall of 26 metres (84 ft). The Sinking of the SS Eastland So what else happened on Saturday the 24th. July 1915? Well, on that day the steamer SS Eastland capsized in the Chicago River in central Chicago, with the loss of 844 lives. She was a passenger ship based in Chicago and used for tours. On the 24th. July 1915, the ship rolled over onto her side while tied to a dock in the Chicago River. A total of 844 passengers and crew were killed in what was the largest loss of life from a single shipwreck on the Great Lakes. After the disaster, the Eastland was salvaged and sold to the United States Navy. After restorations and modifications, Eastland was designated a gunboat and renamed USS Wilmette. She was used primarily as a training vessel on the Great Lakes, and was scrapped after World War II. The Sinking of a U-Boat Also on that day, German submarine SM U-36 was sunk in the North Atlantic by British Q-ship (armed merchant vessel) HMS Prince Charles with the loss of 18 out of the 34 crew. It was the first time a militarised merchant ship was able to sink an enemy vessel without the aid of an accompanying submarine.View image on Flickr
